- The challenge
- Qblox builds the control electronics for quantum computers. Their instruments needed new FPGA functionality exposed through SCPI, an I2C driver issue resolved, and more commands per second over the network.
- What I did
- Added SCPI commands and FPGA integration to the instrument firmware, debugged the I2C driver, and profiled and reworked the network path.
- Result
- Network throughput went from 100 to 150 commands per second, a 50% increase.
Work
Selected work
From quantum computer control electronics to 500 kW fast chargers. A few engagements, what the problem was, and what changed.
- The challenge
- A growing in-house embedded team needed an outside view on how it was organised, what roles were missing, and how hardware and software design fitted together.
- What I did
- Assessed the software department and presented the findings to management. I mentor and coach the five embedded engineers, and write bare-metal I2C and UART drivers alongside them.
- Result
- The recommendations shaped the team structure, hiring for the missing roles, and a shared architecture across PCB and software design.
- The challenge
- Vialis won a public tender for an in-tunnel vehicle speed alarm system and needed new features built on an existing C++03 code base.
- What I did
- Designed, implemented and tested the new features, and migrated parts of the code base to C++11.
- Result
- New features delivered for the tender, and a code base that is easier to maintain on modern C++.
- The challenge
- ChargePoint's 500 kW DC fast chargers needed CHAdeMO and OCPP 2.0.1 Smart Charging, and the vehicle telematics product had to meet ISO 21434 and prepare for the EU Cyber Resilience Act.
- What I did
- Implemented CHAdeMO v1.1 and OCPP 2.0.1 Smart Charging. Later, as technical product owner, introduced ISO 21434 processes and tooling, led the agile transformation of the telematics team and managed the move to a new hardware manufacturer. Acted as engineering manager for 12 engineers during a colleague's absence.
- Result
- CHAdeMO and OCPP 2.0.1 Smart Charging implemented for 500 kW chargers, and a telematics product prepared for automotive cybersecurity and CRA requirements.
- The challenge
- Component behaviour was described by hand in several languages, which made it slow and error-prone to keep consistent.
- What I did
- Designed and built a domain-specific language for component behaviour that generates the C++ and Java code for Thales' systems.
- Result
- One description of component behaviour, from which the code in both languages is generated.
- The challenge
- Citizens needed a secure mobile app for the government "Berichtenbox" inbox, backed by a notification system that could keep up with national scale.
- What I did
- Built the elliptic-curve encrypted app and the push-notification back-end, and introduced acceptance test-driven development into the CI/CD pipeline.
- Result
- An app used by over a million citizens, with a back-end handling 100,000 notifications per second.
